 E-credits

E-credits: an additional opportunity for companies investing in EV charging

The European Union has set a clear objective: to make transport cleaner and increase the share of renewable energy used in the sector. As part of this transition, EU Member States are required to support more sustainable fuels and low-emission mobility.

In Belgium, one of the mechanisms created to support this transition is the e-credit system. For companies that invest in electric vehicle charging infrastructure, e-credits can represent an interesting additional source of revenue.

What are e-credits?

E-credits are value units linked to electricity used for vehicle charging. In simple terms, each kWh charged through an eligible charging station can generate e-credits.

These credits were created to encourage the development of cleaner transport solutions and to support companies investing in sustainable mobility infrastructure.

Why are e-credits interesting for charging stations?

Installing charging infrastructure requires an initial investment. E-credits can help make that investment more attractive by creating an additional financial return.

Charging stations with a power capacity above 50 kW, or charging hubs with a combined capacity of at least 50 kW, may generate e-credits. These credits can then be sold through a dedicated market system.

For companies operating larger charging hubs, this can represent a meaningful yearly return. In some cases, the income generated from e-credits can help reduce the overall cost of operating charging infrastructure.

This makes the installation of charging points more attractive for companies, especially those that are considering investing in EV charging for employees, visitors, fleets, customers or logistics partners.

Supporting the transition to electric mobility

The e-credit system is not only a financial tool. It also supports the wider transition towards zero-emission mobility.

A larger and more accessible charging network helps remove one of the main barriers to electric vehicle adoption: charging availability. More charging points mean more confidence for EV drivers and more opportunities for companies to contribute to cleaner transport.

By encouraging investment in charging infrastructure, e-credits also help reduce CO₂ emissions, improve air quality and support the development of more sustainable mobility solutions.

Conditions to benefit from e-credits

To be eligible for e-credits in Belgium, the charging installation must generally meet certain conditions.

The main requirement is a minimum charging capacity of 50 kW. This can be achieved through one high-power charger or through several charging stations installed at the same address.

The charging points must also allow accurate and compliant measurement of the electricity consumed. This is why MID-certified metering is important, as it ensures that the charged energy is measured correctly.

How much can e-credits generate?

The value of e-credits depends on the amount of electricity charged and on the market price of the credits. This price can change over time, depending on supply and demand.

For companies with a charging hub or several charging points reaching around 50 kW of total capacity, e-credits can help reduce the effective charging cost and improve the return on investment.

How can Castle Energy support you?

Castle Energy can help companies understand whether their charging infrastructure is eligible for e-credits and how this mechanism can support their investment.

The process generally includes:

Data collection

The electricity consumed by the charging stations is collected and monitored.

Conversion into e-credits

The eligible kWh are converted into e-credits according to the applicable rules.

Sale of e-credits

The e-credits can be sold through the appropriate market channels.

Financial return

The value generated depends on the market price of the credits and the volume of energy charged.

By supporting this process, Castle Energy helps companies make better use of their charging infrastructure and benefit from an additional revenue stream linked to sustainable mobility.

A practical step towards greener transport

E-credits are a useful tool for companies that want to invest in electric mobility while improving the financial performance of their charging infrastructure.

They support cleaner transport, encourage investment in EV charging, and create new value from sustainable energy use.
